Dr Lucy McMahon is a Research Fellow in Coastal Ecology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is a marine scientist with expertise in coastal ecology, blue carbon, ecosystem services, and ocean literacy. Lucy completed her PhD entitled ‘Drivers of Blue Carbon Dynamics in Saltmarsh Ecosystems’ at the University of York. Prior to that, she completed an MSc in Marine Environmental Management (Uni. York) and a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology (Uni. Liverpool).
Lucy’s research primarily focuses on coastal wetlands (notably saltmarsh and seagrass habitats in the UK) with a view to inform marine management, conservation and restoration. In her current fellowship, she uses transdisciplinary approaches to understand how we can measure the success of coastal restoration schemes – for people, for biodiversity, and for climate change mitigation.
In addition to her research, Lucy works as a marine consultant delivering projects on any aspect of the marine environment. She also works with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to restore seagrass and delivers seagrass restoration workshops at Universities around the country. Finally, Lucy is passionate about widening participation in marine education and she engages with Women in STEM initiatives (incl. Women in Ocean Science).
